DEEP PURPLE - Power House (1977)
This is a great collection of b-sides, outtakes, etc, from the classic Mark II lineup. However, this album has been made mostly superfluous by all the new 25th Anniversary Editions of the classic albums. The first 3 tracks are early live recordings taken from the warm-up set that preceded the Concerto for Group and Orchestra. These include Gillan doing a great version of "Hush" (much better than the atrocity on "Nobody's Perfect") and a fantastic version of "Child in Time." A lengthy version of "Wring That Neck" is the other song. These songs now appear on the new reissue of the Concerto album. "Cry Free" is a quite good outtake from "In Rock" and now appears as a bonus track on the new edition. "Painted Horse" is a really unusual (and good) sounding outtake from "Who Do We Think We Are" and will be appearing as a bonus track when WDWTWA is re-released in a couple of months. Finally, there is a smoking live version of "Black Night" from the same shows that yielded "Made in Japan". This is now available on the encores disc added to the new edition of that album. So, on the whole this is really great material and essential for fans of Mark II Purple. However, if you are getting the new editions of the classic albums you don't need it (although the mixes on the studio tracks are different, so if you are a completist. . .).
